Wednesday 2nd June

It is with great regret that we have to announce that the 2010 East Riding rock festival has been cancelled, we were going to put a statement up this weekend once we had ensured all the bands had heard, but as usual someone got wind on facebook and quite frankly couldn't hold their own piss and blabbed it everywhere.
The reasons behind this are spiraling costs and poor pre festival ticket sales, we can't even cover our pre festival overheads ( some of which we will still have to pay from our own pockets).
ANYONE WHO HAS BOUGHT A TICKET WILL RECIEVE A FULL REFUND !!
It will take us a few weeks to sort this out so please be patient but rest assured no one will be ripped off.
Any band who hasn't had a personal email yet they are on the way this is a hasty blog to stay any rumors that a flying around. there will be a longer full statement in due course.
Once again we are sorry that it has come to this but financially the festival was unviable.
Regards
Metieval
Friday 14th May

Monday 5th April
In a thrilling night at The Ringside, Blood Red Dawn were crowned champions after securing the most audience votes and being the number 1 choice by our 2 independent judges Darren Bunting & Nely Arockalypse.
The audience voting was:
Blood Red Dawn - 23 Votes
Parkmoor - 22 Votes
Forever And A Day - 21 Votes
Obsidian Crusafe - 12 votes
Judge Nely - Blood Red Dawn
Judge Darren - Blood Red Dawn
Some Words of Wisdom from Darren of Music HQ
'Blood Red Dawn are one of my favourite local hardcore bands and put in a great set, I knew the other bands would have to do something very special to beat them
Obsibian Crusade where a bit rough round the edges and lacked the energy onstage of the other bands but I believe they are quite a new band and also where missing their keyboard player so did well in the circumstances
Parkmoor where very good in a black crows sort of way, touches of glam rock amongst the riffs and with a very good vocalist, they had a bit more energy on stage and I'll be looking to get them booked at a Music HQ gig
Forever And A Day where the most 'uptodate' band with some punk/pop/scene stuff and a group of moshing/pitting fans who had traveled in from Brid to watch them. I'd seen them the week before and thought them a bit average even though they came with high recommendations from another promoter but last night they seemed to click a bit more and put a storming perfromance in just pipping Parkmoor in my personal votes. Another band I'll be getting to gig for Music HQ.'
So a big thanks to all who attended, and was fantastic to see band members from Divine Sinn, Ravenage, Windrider, Heat-Ray & Kalidah their supporting the event.
Special also to Elliot (Windrider & Ravenage) for doing the sound, and Anna & Wayne from Ringside to being our hosts and our legendary photographer Mr Silver Back!
And of course our new sponsors Bad Dog Music :-)
Anyway, now check em out and prepare to be brutalized

Friday 12th February
Oki Doki,
We have just one slot left for the 2010 Festival and we can't decide which band is best to fill it, so just like last year we're having a one off battle of the bands type thing to decide.
The date for this event shall be Saturday 3rd April and once again The Ringside will be host to this event. The rules are very simple.
The winner will be decided by a 3 way vote between the winner of the audience votes, and 2 independent judges (last year we had Darren Bunting of Music HQ & Nely Arockalypse of ARFM Radio), in the event of a 3 way tie, then the winner will be the audience vote. Simple as that eh?
And here's the 3 most asked questions from last year:
Why not just have the audience decide?
Because the band with the most mates will win!
Do we get paid for this gig?
Yep, you get a commisioned ticket deal!
How is the running order decided?
The bands who sell the most tickets get to choose their stage times first!
So if you want to play East Riding Rock Festival in July and share the stage with the likes of BLAZE BAYLEY, AKERCOCKE, GWYDION & THE PROPHECY etc then get in touch now to secure your place.
Friday 1st January 2010

Sunday September 13th
What a night! We can now proudly boast that Hoist The Mainbrace raised a grand total of £600 for the Hoist and we're very proud indeed. We'd like to thank all those involved in this event.

And for those that were there you'll have heard that all the bands that gave up their time and played this gig for nothing have secured themselves a slot at next years East Riding Rock Festival, they'll have also heard that making their East Riding Rock debut will be Sheffield's Progressive Folk Metal outfit NORTHERN OAK alongside Basingstoke's Power Metlar's INTENSE and hull based teenage thrash sensations VIOLENT DECEPTION. Also returning will be Cambridge Progressive Metal Kings AWAKE (who for many were the band of the festival in 2008) alongside the Legend himself BLAZE BAYLEY, and if thats not enough one of the special guests on the Saturday will be Extreme Metal Titans AKERCOCKE who'll be making their live debut in this region.
Wednesday 4th August
So it is now time for the first 3 band confirmations, firstly making their live debut will be East Yorkshire's very own extreme metal outfit NORTHERN TERROR, founded by Garr in 2006, Northern Terror have already a full album and a 4 track E:P in their back catalogue which have been very well received in the black community especially in Norway and Russia. We are absolutely thrilled to be the host of the first ever Northern Terror live performance.
And from the south of Wales and by popular demand, celtic metlars ANNWN shall be returning to our region. Annwn are one of the top folk metal bands in the UK and have already toured extensively supporting the likes of Battlelore & Waylander and their hard work has certainly paid off as they are now confirmed to play at Bloodstock Open Air this year.

And finally we are absolutely delighted to announce that GWYDION will be travelling over here from Lisbon Portugal bringing with them some of the finest Viking Metal that europe has to offer. By the time 2010 comes around Gwydion will be celebrating their 15 year history, which includes 3 self released demos before being signed to Trollzorn/SMP Records, releasing their debut album 'Ynys Mons'. The release of Ynys Mons saw the band perform 2 full European Tours alongside the likes of Tyr & Alestorm and Gwydions reputation was quickly cememented as one of the finest that Europe has to offer.

Do not miss this band under any circumstances:-)

Friday 17th April
Well its been one hell of a frustrating and worrying week on the festival organisation front! We have had to reduce the festival capacity by 85 people, there are VERY FEW TICKETS REMAINING!
PLEASE READ THE STATEMENT BELOW FOR THE REASONS BEHIND THIS.
On wednesday the 8th of April we recieved a message from the East Riding Council, The Police and The Enviromental health people saying that ticket trading and promotion of ERRF had to be suspended and we may be forced to cancel the festival, as we were in breach of the premises license, and local events planning laws, all this was pending on the outcome a meeting held on the 16th of April.
As you can imaging we were horrified just as our big promotional push was coming up we've had the rug pulled from underneath us. After a long and exhaustive meeting, we came up with a compromise we have had to reduce the festivals capacity by 100 tickets and loose the outdoor acoustic stage (though this will be re-situated back inside the venue).
THE FESTIVAL IS STILL GOING AHEAD IT HAS NOT AND WILL NOT BE CANCELLED, AND ITS STILL THE SAME HEADLINE BANDS!!
But the practical upshot of all this is that we have lost almost a third of our revenue, we are taking measures to soften the blow as we speak, as we work on a, cover our costs, and pay for the next event ethos with our prices we dont do this for proffit.
Please everyone who can support this event there are still a few tickets left, this is not a marketing ploy its the truth, show your support for the only East Riding Festival that supports local original talent.
Friday 21st February

Monday 6th October
So it happened and didn't we all have fun!?
We apologise for the lack of updates for the week prior to the festival we were literally snowed under. We also apologise for not delivering Blitzkrieg. This was due to Brian Ross having a punctured lung and we all wish him a full and speedy recovery. Blitzkrieg will certainly be invited to next years East Riding Rock Festival.
On reflection, we think that this year's festival surpassed our expectations and was a much bigger success than last year. Our headliners Skyclad and Blaze Bayley put in sterling performances more than worthy of their reputation. Every band did us proud and we thank each and every one of them for their professionalism and enthusiasm and for making East Riding Rock!
Big thanks to all who attended you made the festival what it was and we hope you enjoyed it and return next year. Please spread the word to your friends, family, teachers, bosses and pets (no squirrels please!!!).
And an even bigger thanks to our crew of volunteers & support staff: Marc, Tracey, Jonathan, Lyn, Jamie, Nick, Amanda, Mulk, Beefy, Bill, Pip, Julie, Sam, Marcos, Kayleigh, Millie, Graham, Dave & Aaron, all the bands who shared equipment, and especially, Marc, Jonothan, Gar, Gore, Mark, Sam, Julie, Tracey, Kharis & Jess who gave up their time to clean up the mess on Sunday morning.
Special thanks to Chris & Tim our sound and lighting crew and to Darren Bunting from Music HQ for organising the acoustic stage.
We're already in early stages of planning next years event, which you won't want to miss:-)
Hope to see you all next year
Bring it on!!!

Blitzkrieg Forced To Withdraw From East Riding
From Blitzkrieg:
Due to Brians recent injury in Greece, Blitzkrieg have been forced to withdraw from this years East Riding Rock Festival on Saturday 4th October. With the extent of Brians injuries 2 weeks would not be sufficient recovery time.
Brian and the band would like to apologise to everyone involved, to the organisers (who have been great and understanding about the situation) and also to the punters who were looking forward to seeing them live.
We at Metieval wish Brian a speedy and full recovery, and Blitzkrieg will be offered a slot at next years East Riding Rock Festival.

You will also notice the addition of 2 more bands in the form of Hades Aperture and Divine Oblivion, these are 2 of the most promising bands in Hull. Hades Aperture recently made their debut at The Ringside's ARFM Charity all dayer gig, and for many of the attending rockers they were the band of the day. They'll also bring a real hardcore edge to the festival.

Divine Oblivion shall be making their live debut by opening up the festival on Friday 3rd October, featuring dual lead vocals and previous members of Ittch, and drawing their influences from a wide range of Metal, we think they'll be one of the festival highlights and are proud to have the exclusive of their debut gig.

To accomodate these 2 bands we can now confirm that the doors will open at 4pm and not at 5pm like it is stated on the ticket. And speaking of tickets, we have less than 25 available, this is not a marketing ploy, last year we sold out in advance and it looks like we'll do the same this year. To avoid potential dissapointment go and buy your ticket today from the online shop or visit one of our outlets listed below.

Thursday 4th October
Review from www.thisisull.com
A heavy metal festival in Beverley? Sounds like fun, so donning my Sworn Amongst tshirt, Cilla and I drove down to the sleepy market town.
Cilla announced almost as soon as we were inside the darkened confines of Beverley Memorial Hall that she was really up for it, and immediately began snapping Face of Scars who were already on stage. It appears to be slowly building death metal; mournful threnodies with guitarist Dan's dreads swinging wildly and Rich on vocals delivering ungodly sermon like Cerberus at the gates of Hell. I need a drink and so it would seem does this midday crowd. Luckily there's a bar open all day - cheapest bar in Beverley - and it will do a roaring trade from now 12pm until it closes almost twelve hours later.
Newcastle Brown in hand, I return to the nightmarish sounds of Face of Scars and loose myself in the song never forget where you come from. There's lasers now and it's getting real exciting as light and shadows are reflected through the smoke and the heavy openers find themselves the focus of all the attention.
I've said it before and I'll say it again - put local bands on a big stage and they just morph into something else entirely (another call for Hull to have its very own purpose built music venue). For the first of what was going to become many forays outside for fresh air and much needed nicotine breaks I bump into Nic and Ashley from Soulflame they tell me that their drummer disasters continue and today will be using drummer Nos.6 Dave Taylor down from Glasgow, Scotland.
Nic tells me can't wait to see Skyclad tonight's headline
band, they have violins, heavy rock and their own dressing room he enthuses.
Friend Chris says he is looking forward to seeing both Soulflame and the band
Heat Ray.
Cilla and I return stage side and are about to be taken on a memorable musical journey in the company of the next band Systemyk. They are a recently signed goth electro five piece. "They have a girl," Cilla announces with a sense of solidarity; and they do in the form of Lu on bass.
So why are they so exciting? Well it's the presence
of the keyboards from Phil, it's the eighties style heartbeats, it's the spaced
out synthesizers It's all this, underlying the snarling goth vocal from Danny,
the heavier guitars from Luke and drums from Paul.
Systemyk continue and refocusing I notice that the guitar doesn't always come
across with a full sound this lack of rounded tone will hamper some of the
bands later on.
However, the echo drenched sounds from the keys, are
coming across artistically creating a multilayered effect that with the laser
on sounds almost anthemic. Highly charged techno beats follow the likes I've
never seen from a goth metal band.
Later on people told me that Systemyk were working the crossover path, similar
to Enter Shikari having not seen E. S. I can't comment, but I was definitely
taken with this new (for me at any rate) and exciting approach. Next on the
memorial stage is Sworn Amongst, the band are on something of a resurgent
tour after their recent signing to Rising Records. The band recently headlined
at Thisisull Live today they underlined why.
The crowd comes in droves from the back of the room to create a line of heads and hair at the front. There's subtlety as well as showmanship as guitar lines stand out amongst heavy, barefooted kick and snare drum patterns. Lively mad moshing, as Sworn Amongst rock out on stage, foot atop monitors, leaning forward as they give a master class in rock metal bravado. Unrelenting like Richard Hammond's rocket propelled race car just before it hits the dirt.
I'm sweating like a bitch, but can't stop now as they launch into Consume and erupt with more cordite chords that go straight to your head.
Soulflame, a welcome addition to any hard rocking show. The Hull 4 piece have been struggling to retain drummers lately and today are using drummer No 6.
They take to the stage to deliver a half hour set of technique driven blues rock. It's all about classic licks, shout out songs with fast pace and thrilling guitar solo's.
When the two Hales' get into an axe feud its something
to savour as each pushes the other that little bit further. They have been
pulling off great performances lately including a Thisisull Live last month
with Sworn Amongst and Nato. Now a message to all the non believers, doubters
and general pea-brains.
There has been talk of late that Soulflame can't represent dirty, sleazy rock
n roll because Nic's Dad is in the band, to that I say bollocks. It's the
music that counts not the ages or relationship of band members (never did
Blaine any harm, having his Dad in Mystery Jets, did it?).
Anyway how about a bit of something for the older generation?
I'm actually surprised at this reaction, he's probably one of the best guitarists
in the city, has helped numerous other bands out, is opening a guitar school
to continue helping budding guitarists and you want to knock him and his son's
band.
I thought it wasn't about image and looking a certain way, I thought it was about real people with passion for what they do and being true to their beliefs; something Soulflame always do and continue to do.
Needless to say, they went down well and once again proved that our bands excel on a larger stage. From Heat Ray we have what I would describe as old skool fast metal with lots of top and middle end guitar thrills. More classic heavy metal refrains and influences of Motorhead and Metallica were evident.
There's a must have metal ballad that breaks out into kick ass mosh laden metal that catches the crowd out. Lead-singer Chunk (who was celebrating his birthday) dedicated a song to a couple who'd just got engaged, called, Welcome ToYour Doom, with a grin.
Sadly the smile was soon wiped of his face when he picked up his drink took a mouthful and promptly got stung by a bee on his lip. He continued to sing and finished the set but was clearly in considerable pain.
I saw him later and he had managed to numb the pain
with a considerable amount of celebratory whiskeys.
Then it's the turn of Heathen Foray. A buzz has been growing up around this
band from metal and rock fans alike and from people curious to know how you
combine Viking mythology and metal. I thought it was a totally new premise,
but looking at my Song Remains the Same video,
I see a suitably Norse looking Robert Plant, stepping
on to a sandy shore, wielding a suitably looking Nordic blade. Not new for
rock then this idea but probably almost certainly new for Hull.
A huge bearded bear of a man leads this band of painted warriors. Dressed
in chain mail shirt and leather trousers, he commands the stage and demands
your attention.
He sings tales of great exploits, in a folk tradition; a storytelling style that is for the most engaging and entertaining. These Viking sagas are played out against a background of dark theatrical rock that does seem to evoke a bygone era.
Their strange garb and flailing hair are captured by
a flurry of camera clicks.
These tall drinking tales to be spoken of only around the tables of Valhalla,
mythological tales of proud warriors marching into battle with Odin in their
hearts and Thor at their side. This is the Call he chants Heed the Call comes
the reply.
My only qualm with Heathen Foray is that the continuous gruff voice that wants to sound like a deafening roar as drinking horns smash on oak trestles, sometimes veers slightly and sounds more Cornish and rustic rather than majestic and Norse. Despite this Heathen Foray is hugely entertaining and I am smiling now as I remember the sight and sound of all those theatrics. And here my tale ends because no more notes were taken. Avenger from Newcastle came on and rocked the Beverley crowd to its socks, including a couple of youngsters who were eager to be part of the show.
The music blared out, the beer poured forth, and everyone was having a fantastic time.
As for Skyclad's 90 minute set I was blown away. Everyone had told me through out the day that
I had to stay to see Skyclad told me that they were just that good and I had to see them. They were right of course, a folkish metal rock infusion that was not to be missed.
I walked in to the memorial Hall for the last time
that night it was maybe gone ten o'clock and I was thrilled by what I saw
before me.
Hundreds of people in the hall many families and older couples, many children
too, the name Skyclad in big letters revolving on the big screen at the back
of the stage.
Tension building then amidst whirls and wheels of violin
reels, dancing erupted throughout the hall. Everybody having a good time,
I caught sight of Stig dancing away down the front.
The lead singer of Skyclad was thoroughly engaged with the crowd who hung
on his every word. It seemed that this band was very well known and many were
singing along to the songs. I have to confess with not being familiar but
I sure as hell enjoyed it.
The atmosphere was superb, the people were superb, the whole day and night
was a resounding success. Hi to Spike, to Kirsty, to Sophie, to Rich and Dan,
to Chunk (hope that lip's okay now) to Chunk's brother, to Mrs. Stig, Lyn
(who told me they celebrate their youngest's birthday on Monday so happy birthday
to you).
Hi to all the people who I spoke to inside and outside
the venue, including the guy who helped me win the cheese war.
I hope you all got home safely and had a really good time as I did.
The lead singer of Skyclad was thoroughly engaged with
the crowd who hung on his every word. It seemed that this band was very well

being familiar but I sure as hell enjoyed it.
I am aware that Metieval was played out over both Saturday and Sunday but
sadly I could only manage the first day. To all the bands that played the
second day my apologies but maybe I'll get to see you next year.
I must mention the organisers and sponsors of the event, well done to everybody who had a hand in putting this memorable first Metieval together. Big shout to Pure Blood Distribution and The Guitar Shop (4 Sowhill Road Beverley 01482 860065) To the East Riding Council for letting this show take place, the organisers look for their continued support and hope to put it all on again next year. To the volunteers at the bar who served an endless chain of metal fans and their families. To the people on the door who insured no undesirables got in to spoil everyone's fun.
To Stig from Talamasca who spent every minute of the day running around organising bands, loading in and loading out, and dealing with a constant blur of demands. To the guys doing the sound okay some people wanted to have you hung at times but really you did a superb job. To all the people selling the merchandise, particularly the special commemorative Metieval tshirts, I'm glad I got mine. And last but not least to the Ice King who entertained in between the earlier bands on the small stage, with his unusual brand of Euro folk rock, but more than that came all the way from Belgium to play Metieval in Beverley, England.
Now that's dedication to the cause!
Big thanks to Michelle and Cilla
